This is how holiday rental owners described Castro in Apulien
Castro , Pearl of Salento, with its gentle atmosphere enveloping, generous nature, its beautiful sea, the beautiful scenery, is one of the most beautiful marinas of Salento
Castro is a coastal town in Salento, on the Adriatic side. It is 15 km from Otranto, Lecce from 45 , 50 from ...
show more Gallipoli and 25 from Leuca. It stands in the middle of a gorgeous arc of coastline from Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca. The inhabitants are about 2500, but in the summer time is populated by tourists attracted to the town. Those arriving in Castro jump right into a nice size that makes you forget the stress and chaos of the city, rocked by emotions that follow each other and involve both soul and body.
We can consider this town divided into two distinct parts: on the one hand, Castro Marina, where there is also the port near which you can see the small caves dug which serve as warehouses for fishermen; the other Castro Superiore, village of ancient origin in a panoramic position on the sea on a long hilly area. It is said that to create the village were Cretans, then called Castrum Minervae by the Romans, becoming an important centre throughout the middle ages as a bishopric in 1179 to 1537, in spite of the current small size. Sixteenth-century fortifications, still visible for long stretches, they confirm not only the ancient importance of the place, but also his need to defend itself from the frequent pirate raids, no doubt facilitated by the presence of a comfortable and safe. So, if the tourist facilities are concentrated especially on the lower part, the major historical and artistic qualities are on the high side. Here we find the Castle erected in the second half of the 16th century on the ruins of another even more ancient, then rebuilt in the following centuries until the 18th century, and is the Cathedral, originally from the 12th century and subsequently changed over time. This church preserves Romanesque structure in the façade, in the transept and the side door, while on the left side are incorporated the remains of a 10th-century Byzantine Church originally a Greek cross. On the right is attached to the old Episcopal Palace of the XV century. Inside holds ancient paintings by artisti salentini from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century including a picture of the Pietà dated 16th century.
In 2009, unfortunately, an abandoned building site in the town's main square (Piazza Dante) has collapsed, but has completed the removal of rubble and is now almost completed the reconstruction of the façade of the buildings that will restore to Piazza Dante its characteristic look.
Even the surrounding Castro takes your breath away: it is in these places that the blue of the sea and the green of the vegetation, come together to present the most varied possible locations. With its famous caves, rocky peaks, to waters rich of fauna and flora, paradise for divers. From the characteristic medieval town rich in history, at the port. From the tasty cuisine to entertainment. All this makes Castro a truly magical place.
